Nestled by the beautiful Great Salt Lake in the coastal town of Torrevieja, Spain, Ellen’s Cats is an open-range sanctuary like no other. Affectionately known as “the crazy cat house by the lake,” it was founded by me, Ellen, and my husband, Tommy, a few years after we emigrated from Norway 25 years ago.

Our sanctuary is home to over 103 wonderful cats and a dog named Leo. Though we primarily fund the sanctuary ourselves, we are cheered on and supported by over 4,000 amazing friends and followers on our Facebook and Instagram pages.

 

A Home for Special Needs Cats
 

Every cat at Ellen’s Cats has special needs and was entrusted to our care by caregivers, veterinarians, rescuers, and departing human companions. They find peace knowing their cats will live a life full of boundless love and care. To the amazement of many, our cats enjoy a free-spirited, calm, and harmonious lifestyle. Cat lovers from near and far can visit their favourite felines, whom they’ve come to know and adore through social media.

Beyond caring for our own cats, we are dedicated to helping all cats in need. We actively manage feral and stray cat populations through trapping, neutering, vaccinating, and returning (TNVR) programs. This crucial work helps prevent the spread of viruses such as panleukopenia (FP) and leukaemia (FeLV), ensuring better coexistence between humans and stray cats in our community—a challenge that isn’t always easy in Spain.
